How do I prepare
for band camp?
Get outside and enjoy the heat between now and the first
camp. THIS WILL MAKE A HUGE DIFFERENCE. Pace yourself and be careful not to
overheat. Also, start walking or jogging to get yourself in better
cardiovascular shape. Drink plenty of water every night before camp. Eating
healthy and knowing good nutrition habits are a huge tool to success. You need to take care of your body so that we
can all be strong.
Get in Shape (on your instrument). Play a few scales, lip slurs, long tones, or
whatever you need to do to be ready to play long hours.
What should I
bring to band camp?
Water container. This is absolutely the most important item to
bring, besides your instrument. You will
be outside and can quickly dehydrate without proper water intake. Incoming freshmen will be
supplied with a water container. Returning students can use the water container
they were provided their incoming year. Additional water containers will not be
provided if lost.
Instrument. If you are borrowing an
instrument it will be assigned the first day of band camp. If you are not
borrowing an instrument, be sure to check that your instrument is in working
order.
Reeds, valve oil, or slide
grease.
Lyre and flipbook. These items are needed for
stands tunes music. If you do not have a lyre or flipbook, you may purchase one
from a local music store or online.
If you need reeds, valve oil, slide
grease, a lyre, or a flip book,
The Music Man will be coming
on *tba*
What should I
wear?
Loose fitting
clothing You should wear a pair of shorts and a t-shirt, and they
should be light colors. NO DENIM – it
will trap the heat and only serve to make you uncomfortable.
Athletic shoes with
socks Absolutely NO flip-flops or sandals for band camp. We march.
We move. You can easily hurt yourself trying to march in flip-flops or sandals.
Sunscreen/Chap stick
with Sunscreen Band camp is NOT the
time to work on your tan. That sunburn won’t feel good tomorrow. Remember to
reapply every 2 hours or so. Apply chap stick that protects against the sun.
Sunburned lips are not fun to play an instrument with, especially for brass
players.
Hat You will be outside and will want to keep the sun off of
your face as much as possible.
What should I eat and drink during band camp?
ALWAYS
eat something and hydrate before outside rehearsals. Bring a nutritious lunch
and snacks. Foods high in carbohydrates, such as cereal, bread, etc. are best.
Fruit is also good. Try to avoid dairy products and meat (especially fried).
These foods will make you nauseous when you are out in the sun. Drinks that
have caffeine or carbonation should also be avoided. Water and sports drinks
will work best.
